The Social Mobility Foundation Manchester accountancy futures day

The Social Mobility Foundation (SMF) is a charity which aims to make a practical improvement in social mobility for young people from low-income backgrounds. The SMF was founded in 2005 to provide opportunities and networks of support for 16-17 year olds who are unable to get them from their schools or families.

The SMF holds regular events for their students, with the sole purpose of providing a unique insight into different career sectors. These events, aptly known as ‘future’s days’, are designed to show young people their options, so that when making any future decisions, these are informed decisions.

Consultants from Bruin Financial’s Manchester office were invited to the recent Accountancy Futures Day, to help 6th form students develop their understanding of the many possible pathways of an accountant and the significance of accountancy on both a local and global scale.

The ‘Careers Carousel’ involved a number of professionals from large Financial Services institutions sharing their early experiences in the work place and students encouraged to ask questions.

As specialists in financial services recruitment our experienced Consultants were able to advise students on best practice when it comes to the job application process and the skills employers are looking for from new entrants to the job market.

“I gained a chance to really interact in a business environment and solve business problems, financial as well as other obstacles that they face.” SMF Student, 2019

Bruin is proud to have collaborated with SMF in supporting an important outreach program designed to give students access to a network they may not have. With employers continually changing their recruitment methods it is important that young people entering the job market are aware of what techniques will help them in this process.

“I gained confidence and hope.” SMF Student, 2019

We found it an incredibly enlightening experience and were extremely impressed with the level of engagement and enthusiasm from the ‘next generation’ of business professionals. As part of our commitment to all matters Diversity & Inclusion it is a privilege to recognise the talent that will enter our local network in the future.

Bruin Financial has supported The Social Mobility Foundation since 2014 and a number of our Consultants have been involved their mentoring programme, providing guidance to students. For more information about applying to The Social Mobility Foundation as a student, or for details on how you can get involved to support their initiatives please visit their website at: www.socialmobility.org.uk
