Senior PI Underwriter

About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced and commercially astute Senior Professional Indemnity (PI) Underwriter to join their expanding team. This senior position will play a key role in driving underwriting excellence, shaping portfolio strategy, and supporting broader business growth across the UK PI market, with scope to influence European PI development depending on expertise.

This is a UK wide opportunity with flexible working arrangements.

As a senior member of a newly established yet collaborative underwriting team, you will take ownership of a sophisticated PI portfolio, lead broker engagement across key relationships, and deliver high quality underwriting decisions that reflect the company’s strategic risk appetite. You will also help mentor junior team members, contribute to product evolution, and support the long term profitability of the PI book.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the underwriting and management of a diverse and complex portfolio of UK PI risks across multiple professions, overseeing renewals, referrals, and targeted new business opportunities.
  • Develop, strengthen, and strategically manage key broker relationships, providing market leading service, guidance, and commercial insight.
  • Exercise advanced technical underwriting judgement, ensuring risk selection, pricing, and coverage align with profitability targets and the wider underwriting strategy.
  • Drive portfolio growth initiatives, identifying areas for product enhancement, cross selling, and sustainable expansion.
  • Contribute to and influence underwriting strategy discussions, sharing senior level insight on market trends, competitive conditions, and emerging risks.
  • Support potential expansion into European PI markets, providing leadership on risk appetite, product suitability, and distribution strategy where relevant.
  • Act as a senior point of referral for junior underwriters, providing technical support, coaching, and development.
  • Ensure robust governance and compliance, maintaining accurate underwriting records and meeting all internal and external regulatory standards.

What We’re Looking For

  • Significant experience underwriting UK Professional Indemnity risks, ideally in a senior or referral level role.
  • Strong technical knowledge of the UK PI market, with European PI exposure advantageous.
  • Demonstrable expertise in risk assessment, pricing, negotiation, and portfolio management.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, and relationship building skills, especially with brokers and internal stakeholders.
  • A proactive, commercially minded, and collaborative approach, with the confidence to challenge, recommend, and lead.
  • Familiarity with Lloyd’s and London Market practices is highly beneficial.
  • A commitment to high underwriting standards, professional integrity, and continuous improvement.
