The Diversity Project

Kirsty Pineger, Director at BRUIN and Head of Wealth & Asset Management, is a member of the Steering Committee for The Diversity Project, an initiative led by representatives from the investment and savings industries’ biggest institutions, who have come together to solve diversity levels in the industry ‘once and for all’.

In early 2016, a group of leaders in the investment and savings profession decided to take action to accelerate progress towards an inclusive culture within asset management, recognising that future success – for the industry’s clients, members, employers and shareholders – requires an inclusive culture.

This led to the formation of The Diversity Project, a collaborative and open source initiative, design to complement the existing programmes of individual firms and national schemes, to achieve diversity in the industry over a five year timeframe.

The Project is led by a senior-level Steering Group that includes Allianz Global Investors’ Head of Institutional for Europe, Irshaad Ahmad, PLSA Chair, Lesley Williams, Senior Investment Consultants, Jane Welsh from Willis Towers Watson and Sinead Clark from Mercer, along with Carmignac Gestion Managing Director, Maxime Carmignac. The group is chaired by Helena Morrissey, Head of Personal Investing at Legal and General Investment Management, Founder of the 30% Club and Investment Association Chair.

The Project spans the whole range of the profession: asset owners, fund managers, fund selectors, pension consultants, actuaries, trustees, wealth managers and the professional standards and trade bodies. It is overseen by the CEO/Chair Advisory Council, which provides strategic input and business leadership. The Steering Committee leads the implementation of the strategy, through specific work streams across all dimensions of diversity, including gender, ethnicity, socio-economic background, LGBTI+, age and disability.

The aim is to share best practice, and where there are gaps, establish new ones to help create a more diverse industry at all levels from intake to senior leadership and the board. This objective seeks to deepen the understanding and image of what the investment industry actually does and the varied roles within it, to encourage a broader range of new entrants.

Among The Diversity Project’s varied activities are networking and mentoring opportunities, and focused events, designed to develop and retain existing diverse talent.
