We also realise that our recognised expertise in financial services recruitment means that we occupy a position of influence. Every year we provide job opportunities for thousands of job seekers in some of the leading global financial services organisations. As a result we are in a position not just to talk about diversity and inclusion, but to drive them forward. We therefore take our responsibilities in this area very seriously.

Launch of the City Talent Initiative

The CTI programme was initiated by BRUIN Financial following a challenge from Labour MP, the Rt Hon David Lammy, on the barriers to entry for talented young people who lack access to a vast range of career opportunities, and particularly jobs in the City. With little or no vital social capital, such as access to opportunities through connected friends and family, many of the best and brightest from British society miss out on opportunities.

In response, BRUIN Financial invited a number of prestigious firms to discuss a solution that the City could offer and, with the Social Mobility Foundation (SMF) as programme manager, the CTI was born.

Today, the CTI has gained cross party support from Mark Field MP (Cons) and Baroness Kramer (Lib Dem) and sponsoring firms include Ernst & Young, JP Morgan, Strutt & Parker, Bank of America, and RBS.

The City Talent Initiative (CTI) is a programme dedicated to supporting high-achieving young people from low-income backgrounds gain entry to leading City firms. On joining the programme, managed by the SMF, successful applicants will be matched with a mentor working at a sponsoring firm, where they will undertake a summer internship, who will help them prepare for their internship and also guide them through their University choices and application.

During the internship, students will gain an insight into the professional world; undertake a range of meaningful tasks to complete and gain an introduction to the different lines of business within their sponsoring firm.

On-going Partnerships

Following their first year, CTI alumni will continue to be supported by their mentor and internship host, be invited back for further skill sessions and longer internships while at University, with the aim of equipping them with the social capital, mind set and experience to secure a top graduate role that their circumstances may otherwise not have afforded.

CTI participants will be identified through the SMF’s network of school relationships and will undertake a detailed application process assessing their interest in a career in the city, as well as their academic performance and socio-economic background, in order to select the strongest candidates. Typically, 85% of participants in SMF Programmes in London are from ethnic minorities and over 60% are female.

Entry Requirements:

The CTI is open to applications from Year 12 students, initially from London schools, with selective criteria for those on free school meals or the first in their family to attend university. To join the City Talent Initiative, students must live within an hour of London and meet two sets of criteria; background and academic.
